$3,400 Rolex purchase made at Fort Myers store on stolen credit card

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Jan. 30 theft at the Gannon’s Antique’s and Arts store in Fort Myers.

According to the sheriff’s report, a male suspect called the store and purchased a stainless steel Rolex Submariner wristwatch for $3,400 on a credit card.

There was a request made to have the watch shipped to an address in California.

On Jan. 31, a Florida woman called the store and said she found a $3,400 charge on her credit card but never placed an order at the store.

A stoppage of delivery was requested, but the watch was delivered and signed for at the California address.

Montblanc Star Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph Open Date Watch: A Luxurious “Time Writer” With A Skeleton Dial

Montblanc Star Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph Open Date Watch: A Luxurious “Time Writer” With A Skeleton Dial

The Star Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph watch was a show-stopper for Montblanc in 2008, demonstrating the brand’s serious foray into the “Manufacture” realm as well as offering a surprising interpretation of the chronograph as it was originally envisioned. In 2009, the Montblanc Star Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph becomes even more attractive, thanks to an alluring skeleton dial that reveals some of the fascinating mechanism.

For those who may have missed it, the Montblanc Star Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph watch departs noticeably from most mechanical chronographs on the market, in that elapsed time is displayed not by a hands that travels a subdial, but by discs that rotate beneath stationary hands–spiritually inspired (minus any ink!) by the concept of the chronograph as first invented by Monsieur Rieussec in the 19th century.

Lovers of fine detail–an unspoken requirement of any true luxury timepiece–probably couldn’t find much to fault with the first edition of the Montblanc Star Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph watch. Certainly though, the new Star Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph Open Date model reveals new dimensions of a noteworthy timepiece, giving a substantive Montblanc debut added panache.

A. Lange & Sohne Exhibitions: Artistic Mediums Illuminate Saxon Fine Watchmaking

A. Lange & Sohne Exhibitions: Artistic Mediums Illuminate Saxon Fine Watchmaking

Following up its January presentations at the 2009 SIHH exhibit in Geneva, German watch manufacture A. Lange & Sohne will utilize a variety of artistic mediums to illustrate the comprehensive mastery of its skilled watchmakers and artisans in venues around the world. Among the methods used to showcase A. Lange & Sohne craftsmanship include classical art forms such as sculpture and painting, in addition to the most advanced multi-media presentations.

The new hand-wound movement of the 40mm Lange 1815 watch is the focus of "Explored-View Time", an exceptional reproduction of Lange craftsmanship in an exploded three-dimensional format 25 times larger than actual size. Painstaking attention to detail ensures that this enlarged model accurately reproduces the surface finishing and decorations which are a signature element of A. Lange & Sohne manufacture calibers.

"David vs. Goliath" is an installation that uses the driving train of a racing cycle alongside the complex fusee-and-chain mechanism of A. Lange & Sohne's new Richard Lange Pour le Merite watch to illustrate the similarity of function, despite the differences of scale. "Richard Lange's Fingerprint" is a micro-installation that utilizes the same material from which the in-house produced Lange balance springs are drawn; it pays respect to the significant role that Richard Lange played in the development of hairsprings so crucial to all manner of mechanical watches.

A. Lange & Sohne will make use of these exhibits at a variety of brand events held throughout 2009.

A. Lange Sohne represents the foundation of the fine watchmaking industry in Germany. Most consumers think that fine watchmking is limited to Switzerland. In fact, many of the finest watches and greatest innovations come from the German watchmaking industry. Glashutte, a small town in the Ore Mountains of eastern Germany, is the heart of the German watchmaking indsutry and home to the A. Lange & Sohne manufacture. The story of A. Lange & Sohne is both inspiring and rich. Founded by Adolph Lange in 1845, this company has kept its roots in Glashutte. The story behind A. Lange & Sohne began in Dresden the nearby capital of the state of Saxony. A local watchmaker named Gutkaes was asked by a member of the local Royalty to create a unique clock for the local Semper Opera. The result was the famous five minute digital clock. Adolphe Lange created a partnership with Gutkaes. After creating horological masterpieces for various European nobles, the partners moved to the small town of Glashutte from Dresden and A. Lange & Sohne was born. A. Lange & Sohne has pioneered several major innovations that helped propel A. Lange & Sohne to the top of the fine watchmaking world.

TAG HEUER online registration?

Q : Does anyone know what happens if you try to make an online registration in the official web page of a TAG HEUER watch purchased by Amazon?
Have anyone had a problem with it or with the authenticity of the watch??

Answer :

E. Sandalls says:
There are conflicting reports about this. What could you lose by going ahead and registering. If the watch is from the grey market, TAG-Heuer's decision to not offer warranty is probably already made, so I don't imagine they will change their mind either way just because you try.

Important question: did you buy the watch from Amazon, or from an independent trader using Amazon just as a market-place for sales over which Amazon seem to have little control? Too many ignoramii are getting their hands on grey-market watches and selling them roughly the way people sell pop-corn at ball games. Any serious watch seller must have a coonsumer satisfaction rating well over 99%, because if you think about the difference between the cost of raw materials and the price of a watch, you'll see you are paying mostly for quality and service. So you should get quality and service!

Grey market watches are nearly always, (just covering my butt in case writing simply "always" proves to be a hostage to fortune), authentic watches, sold outside the manufacturer's Approved Dealer net-work. It seems as if every thread on this forum ends up becoming a discussion about the grey market. Give some of the recent ones a read.

Make you own opinion after that bit of reading. I do not trust grey market sellers I have not met in the "real" world, BUT at the moment, if you are a half-clued-up haggler, you will be amazed by the discounts available in the Approved Dealer networks. You should get enough discount to reduce the price advantage of the grey market watches to the point where the premium paid to an AD is worth it just to have the peace of mind of full manufacturer and AD network support.

Whatever happens, TAG-Heuer make fine watches, albeit frequently over-priced, (see preceding paragraph).

C. Johnson says:
I just registered my watch on the Tag site with no problems. I purchased mine directly from Amazon two weeks ago. It is running fast. I spent about 45 minutes online with Amazon and it was decided that I would send it back for a refund. I have to go back to the local jewelers to have links put back in the band. They don't have anymore of the same watch in stock, so they'll refund my purchase price. I love the watch, but after reading some posts, it seems that this is a common problem. On one hand, like some other posters, one would expect a $2,000 watch to keep time as good as my $250 Lumi-nox. On the other hand, I wonder if its worth the hassle to send it in, wait 2-3 weeks for the refund to hit and then order another one, when available.

IWC launches new aquatimer watch family

Thanks to its robustness and dependability, the diver’s watch remains the sports watch of choice to this day and doubles as a reliable reserve as the indispensable underwater back up system, even if the dive computer now relieves the underwater sportsman of most of the necessary calculations. Once again, IWC Schaffhausen has extensively revised, both technically and aesthetically, its family of diver’s watches, first introduced in 1967 under the name Aquatimer and since then further developed on a number of occasions. This step coincides with a new partnership in support of environmental and marine conservation, which IWC has entered into with the Charles Darwin Foundation in Galapagos to mark the Darwin bicentennial year in 2009. One of the new Aquatimer models, the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Islands, is dedicated specifically to this commitment.

This new environmental commitment by IWC will start in the Darwin anniversary year – 2009 – in which the scientific world will celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of the great British biologist and behavioral scientist, Charles Darwin. He made his fundamental observations on the origin of species mainly on Galapagos, the unique archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, which was never in contact with the mainland at any time in the history of evolution. Specific animal and plant species not to be found anywhere else on earth evolved here through natural se lection as a result of the differences in living conditions – even from one island to the next.

This is also true of the marine life. Yet this “lab oratory of evolution” is massively endangered by settlement, by illegal fishing and by the introduction of animals that are destroying the basis of existence of the indigenous species. The non-profit Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) has more than 100 interns actively engaged in the conservation of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is on the “Red List”. IWC not only backs this cause in non-material ways, but also through a considerable financial contribution to support the CDF in this worthy endeavor. New watch models in the Aquatimer family .

The Aquatimer family will include the following watches from 2009 onwards: – Aquatimer Deep Two – Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Islands – Aquatimer Chronograph – Aquatimer Chronograph in red gold – Aquatimer Automatic 2000 All have the following features in common: the case dimensions have increased slightly to 44 mm, and in one particular instance even to 46 mm. Another immediately obvious feature shared by the revised family is the rotating diving bezel, now located externally once again. IWC has always incorporated two possibilities for measuring dive times in its diver’s watches. The first Aquatimer was equipped initially with a rotating inner bezel, which was operated via the second crown. The system is particularly secure as far as unintentional adjustment is concerned, although it is not so user-friendly when the diver is wearing gloves. The OCEAN 2000 watch model dating from 1982 – a result of the collaboration with Porsche Design – had already adopted an external rotating bezel, which the GST Aquatimer from 1997 also retained.

The Aquatimer generation of 2009 embraces this technology once again in the form of an external rotating bezel of an entirely new design. This can be rotated even when wearing gloves – and for safety reasons only in the anti-clockwise direction. In this case, a 4-mm wide sapphire crystal ring llies above a thick layer of Super-LumiNova®* luminous pigment applied in six coats. This means that the luminescence and legibility are optimal under all conditions of visibility. The revised family picks up the yellow-black and blue-orange signature colours of the previous Aquatimer family in a number of models, but it also introduces new and interesting colour combinations for the dial, hands and indicators.

A further characteristic element of the new family of diver’s watches is the innovative bracelet replacement system**. The new Aquatimer is equally suitable as a sporting all-rounder and for professional underwater use. For example, a lightweight hook-and-loop strap is appropriate when diving to allow the watch to be worn over the neoprene diving suit. Wearing such a strap out of the water would be unusual, to say the least. Some prefer this lightweight material to a solid steel bracelet, but would like to change from time to time. To bring together all these preferences under a single hat, all Aquatimer models have been equipped with a new bracelet quick-change system**. In response to finger pressure on the underside of the bra ce let/strap lug, a lever disengages the locking mechanism and separates the bracelet or strap from the case. When being worn on the wrist, however, the watch cannot be separated from its bracelet or strap, even inadvertently. The replacement bracelet or strap (whether synthetic, rubber or steel) is then introduced into the bracelet/strap lug and engages there. This simple operation can be performed without tools in a few seconds.

Aquatimer Deep Two: The diver’s watch with a mechanical depth gauge makes a return after ten years in the form of the Aquatimer Deep Two, pressure-resistant to 12 bar. Like its predecessor, the GST Deep One from 1999, it shows not only the actual dive depth, but also the maximum depth reached during a particular dive. It thus doubles as a complete second safety system alongside the dive computer. Whereas the GST Deep One was able to measure water depths down to 45 metres, the Aquatimer Deep Two features a semi-circular indicator on the dial, which records depths down to 50 metres.

Its pressure measurement system is contained in a second large crown on the left side of the case. The water pressure acts directly on a membrane inside this crown and forces a pin into the interior of the case. This movement actuates a lever mechanism connected to the measurement hands. However, only the raised tips of the hands at the level of the dial can be seen to move over the indicator scale through a semi-circular slot in the dial. The hands in this case are led around the movement. This is an ingenious solution, which avoids the need for the path of the arbors to pass through the movement. The depth indicator (blue) moves over the white measuring field as the depth of water increases or decreases. The maximum depth indicator (red) always remains at the greatest depth reached. It can be released by a button underneath the depth-gauge sensor crown on the left side of the case. The Aquatimer Deep Two is the only member of the family with a case diameter of 46 mm.

Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Islands: Featuring the same case size and the same automatic drive mechanism (79320 calibre movement) as the Aquatimer Chronograph, the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Is lands is a shining example of the revised watch family in every respect. The matt black stainless steel case, completely coated with vulcanized rubber, the black dial and the strongly contrasting white indications together with the black rubber strap make the watch, which is pressure resistant to 12 bar, a conspicuous statement on the wrist. It is the ambassador of a new collaboration between IWC and the Charles Darwin Foundation with its presence on the Galapagos Islands.

Aquatimer Chronograph: Sporting the attributes of the new Aquatimer family, such as the external rotating bezel and the bracelet quick-change system**, the Aquatimer Chronograph is available in stainless steel – with either a stainless steel bracelet or a rubber strap – in two different dial variants: in the Aquatimer signature colours of black and yellow, or in the striking co lour combination of blue and coral red. The watch in its 44-mm diameter case is pressure-resistant to 12 bar. The 79320 calibre chronograph movement records aggregate times up to 12hours on rhodium plated inner dials. In addition to the date, it also has a day display.

Aquatimer Chronograph in red gold: Of the diver’s chronographs, the Aquatimer Chronograph in red gold stands out particularly in both visual and horological terms. It is the first watch in the Aquatimer family to be equipped with the IWC manufactured 89360 calibre, the chronograph movement developed and built in its en tirety by IWC. It is distinguished by its flyback function and the two-hand display of the long stop times on a single inner dial. The 89360 calibre movement, wound by the IWC double-pawl automatic winding system, is currently regarded as one of the most modern mechanical movements with a stop function, which can also be observed through the sapphire glass back in this sportingly elegant diver’s watch. This watch, which is pressure-resistant to 12 bar, is only available in a 44-mm diameter red gold case with a black rubber strap.

Aquatimer Automatic 2000: Its name is a watchword. In terms of water resistance, the Aquatimer Automatic 2000 with its tested pressure resistance of 200 bar still holds the record in the watch family. It features a black dial and a black external rotating bezel with the familiar luminous yellow 15-minute segment of the previous Aquatimer in stainless steel. The colour yellow is also used for the minute hand, which indicates the dive time, to ensure a clear distinction. A second variant has a white dial with orange or white numerals on a white or dark blue background on the rotating bezel and an orange hour hand. It is powered by the 30110 calibre automatic movement. The Aquatimer Automatic 2000 is available with an optional stainless steel bracelet or a rubber strap.

The world's coolest watches - Suunto

Written by Cherry Creek News

Made in Finland, where orienteering is national pasttime, Suunto watches are the best motorcycling watches around. With features that also endear them to skiers, hikers, backcountry enthusiasts, snowboarders and more, these watches, especially the Suunto Vector and Suunto Core models are simply attractive and irresistable technology.

And in the heartrate monitor, and you have a great training tool for bicyclists and runners, too.

Since it's introduction in 1998, the Suunto Vector wristop computer has acted as the altimeter, barometer, electronic compass, and digital logbook for everyone from mountaineers to the Marines. The Vector keeps track of almost everything for you. It is the very tiny instrument panel that could be the key to backcountry survival. This year's Vector adds degree numbers and cardinal half points to the compass bezel, allowing users to make more accurate readings in the field. The Vector's altimeter enables users to track ascent and descent rates, as well as the number of runs skied in a day. This information can be very helpful when determining if you can bag one more descent at the end of a long tour. The watch's barometer allows you to track weather changes and automatically records atmospheric pressure over 4 days in 6hr intervals. Being able to track incoming storms is key when deciding how to prepare for a day of skiing or climbing.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Product Description
The Suunto Vector X Wristop Computer is the answer to the challenges faced by outdoor enthusiasts all around the world. To play safely in the wilderness, it's vital to know your playground, and the Suunto Vector X can help you to do just that.

A truly amazing instrument, the Suunto Vector X is designed to give you the most accurate, real-time information about your surroundings that you can get anywhere. Regardless of whether you are climbing mountains, riding a muddy bike track, or skiing off piste, the Suunto Vector X will never let you down. It combines an altimeter, barometer, and an electronic compass with all the features of a sophisticated sports watch.

The clear logic of the user interface makes Suunto Vector X a real help on the mountain. Its ergonomic design with a large display, electro-luminescent backlight, convenient control buttons, and user-replaceable battery makes it easy to use even in the harshest and toughest conditions.

For backcountry and skiing enthusiasts, the Suunto Vector X is loaded with features that will help to keep you safe in the most demanding of situations. The watch's altimeter has a range up to 9,000 meters (29,500 feet), with a one-meter resolution. It also features an altitude difference measurement function for following vertical progress between stages. It has an automatic 24-hour memory that stores the altitude and ascent/descent rate for every hour and an adjustable altitude alarm and several memory functions. With the logbook function, for instance, you can record total and cumulative vertical ascents and descents, as well as the number of runs skied. The barometric functions provide you with valuable information for forecasting weather changes. Information on the present sea level pressure helps you read and understand the barometric pressure at high altitudes.

The Vector's compass shows the cardinal or half-cardinal point abbreviated and indicates north with an arrow. It can be set to track a certain bearing, and graphically show the difference between it and the actual bearing. This is a valuable tool when trying to get back on track after minor or major detours in the terrain. The declination adjustment function allows the user to correct the difference between true north and magnetic north. These features all combine to provide you with vital information that will help you make safe and responsible decisions during your excursions. The Suunto Vector X automatically records barometric data for the past four days: the first six hours in one-hour intervals and after that in six-hour intervals. When the reference altitude is set correctly, the instrument also shows the present sea level pressure, which makes it easier to read and understand the barometric pressure at high altitudes.

In addition to its invaluable outdoor-related functions, the Suunto Vector X also displays normal time. It has three daily alarms, a calendar programmed to the year 2089, and a stopwatch with split time measurement and a countdown timer. The time can be shown in 12 or 24-hour format. In short, the Suunto Vector is an outdoor enthusiast's dream -- a beautifully engineered watch that's versatile enough for the world's highest peaks as well as everyday use.

IWC Gold Aquatimer Vintage Collection Automatic Watch

Last year the watch loving public was delighted to see the Vintage collection from IWC that included a vintage styled Aquatimer watch, closely resembling the first Aquatimer watch from 1967. This was easily the best of the new Vintage line watches in my opinion, and still looks great a year later. This year IWC has taken the entire new IWC Vintage line and added 18k gold (white or rose gold) versions of the 44m wide case to the strong lineup.

This is the rose gold IWC Vintage Aquatimer on a honey alligator strap. The look is about as beautiful a retro diver watch as you can get. The internal rotating bezel is controlled via the top crown on the right side of the watch, which is screwed down. Inside is an IWC manufactured 80111 calibre automatic movement with Pellaton winding system and integrated shock absorbers. Sapphire crystals (antireflective) are on the front and rear of the watch. This true diver's watch is water-resistant to 12 ATM. Price likely $15,000 - $20,000 for the gold versions of this highly desirable IWC Vintage Aquatimer watch. Perfect for actual diving or otherwise.

Pre-Baselworld 2009: Breitling Navitimer 125th Anniversary Watch

Swiss watchmaker Breitling marks the passage of its 125th anniversary with a limited edition model of its historic Navitimer Chronograph. Naturally incorporating the famous slide rule bezel which enables a variety of calculations, the Breitling Navitimer 125th Anniversary watch recalls classic models in this historic family of pilot's timepieces with such elements as a two-counter chronograph complication and a rigid "Air Racer" bracelet.

Manufactured from stainless steel or 18-karat red gold, the case of the Breitling Navitimer 125th Anniversary watch features a curved sapphire crystal which is anti-reflective treated on both sides, for maximal reduction of glare. The stainless steel variant is fitted with a black or bronze dial, while the red gold version features a black or silver dial. In both choices of metal, the hours are marked by polished applied baton indexes.

The Breitling Navitimer 125th Anniversary watch is animated by the Breitling 26 Caliber, a self-winding mechanical movement which has undergone and passed 15 days of precision tests by the Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (COSC). A balance frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour enables the chronograph function to record independent time intervals to within 1/8 second. A crown-adjusted date display is also featured. The power reserve of the Breitling 26 Caliber is approximately 42 hours.

Breitling will produce 2,009 examples of the 125th Anniversary Navitimer watch in stainless steel, and another 125 in red gold. The water resistance of both models is 30 meters.

Casio Shares Fall After G-Shock Maker Cuts Forecasts

By Lena Lee

Feb. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Casio Computer Co. fell in Tokyo trading after the Japanese maker of Exilim cameras and G-Shock watches cut its earnings forecasts.

Casio dropped 2.8 percent to close at 670 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average lost 1.1 percent.

Net income is projected to fall 88 percent to 1.5 billion yen ($17 million) in the year ending March 31, less than the company’s earlier forecast of 13.5 billion yen, Tokyo-based Casio said yesterday after the market closed. A decline in demand and anticipated “greater setbacks” in the global economy led the company to cut its outlook, Casio said.

Online Pricing Techniques

Invicta is a member of a class of watchmakers that engages in a practice I would consider somewhat deceptive, i.e. showing a "retail" price that no one ever pays. Thus, you see what looks like a really good deal (80% discount off MSRP) and conclude you are getting a great watch for a bargain price. But no one ever pays MSRP.

Other watch companies that seem to use similar pricing techniques are Croton, Stuhrling, Lucien Picard, Jacques Lemans, and Swiss Legend. Their pricing suggests that you are getting a great deal on a watch in the Movado, Raymond Weil or Maurice Lacroix price class, whereas in fact they generally price in the same range as Seiko or Citizen at substantially lower quality (based on discussion on this and other forums).

The Latest Trends In Men's Watches -

Look for a return to subdued styles and traditional models.

Forget bling. Watches are toning down in 2009.

The mood was subdued at the annual Salon International de la Haute Herlogerie (SIHH) watch trade show in Geneva, Switzerland, which ran from Jan. 19 through Jan.23

"These difficult times are affecting how people want to be perceived," says Ira S. Krieger, chairman and CEO of the watch company bearing his name. "Consumers don't want to go over the top."

On display: revived vintage timepieces and understated metals like stainless steel, as well as a heightened appreciation of watchmaking's traditional craftsmanship with skeleton designs that reveal a timepiece's inner mechanisms through a clear casing, and the intricate tourbillon, coveted by collectors. Patented in 1801 by Abraham-Louis Breguet, the tourbillon was designed to counteract the effects of gravity by isolating parts inside a revolving cage.

In Pictures: The Latest Trends In Men's Watches
The number of buyers and press who attended the trade show was down about 20% compared to 2008, but the 17 brands that exhibited their collections reported positive sales results in line with expectations, according to organizers.

While most of the collections revealed at SIHH will not be available for purchase until later in the year, retailers and watchmakers have already started incorporating toned-down pieces that focus on the mechanics, movements and basics of each brand.

Men are gravitating toward vintage watches and revamped timepieces that highlight a brand's legacy, observes Leonid Khankin, managing and creative director at watchmaker Ernst Benz. "Now it's about the historical context of the watch and a return to timelessness and modern elegance."

Corum, for example, re-issued the classic Romvlvs Steel. Originally created in 1966, this was the first watch to display the hour numerals on its outside rim. Prior to this, numbers were mounted solely on the face of the watch. Today's revamped version has the engraved Roman numerals on satin-brushed steel.

Comment On This Story
The skeleton is another old story being retold by watchmakers such as Krieger. Since the 1800s, skeleton timepieces have been admired by collectors, and in 2009 they are being looked upon as a conversation piece that doesn't scream glitz. Peer through the face of Krieger's Elite stainless steel skeleton and you will see the gears that make the watch tick.

"Watchmaking is the oldest mechanical art," notes Ernst Benz's Khankin. "Just like men are fascinated by fast cars and their inner workings, the same goes for watches. They want the most powerful models, and they are curious about how they operate."

Watchmakers are also getting away from newfangled metal combinations like tantalum, magnesium and ceramic. In 2009, it's back to basics with steel, and yellow and rose gold.
