Hublot CEO sees near flat sales in 2009
* Ebel co-president expects sales to be lower in 2009
(Adds details, background)
By Katie Reid and Silke Koltrowitz
BASEL, March 25 (Reuters) - Swiss watchmaker Hublot expects sales to be near flat in 2009, while rival Ebel struck a more cautious note, saying its overall sales this year were likely to be lower than in 2008 as American demand for watches withered.
Hublot, which sits alongside watch brands Tag Heuer and Zenith at French luxury group LVMH (LVMH.PA), posted 2008 sales of about 250 million Swiss francs ($221.6 million) and is aiming to hit this level in 2009 as demand for its watches holds up.
"We might be a couple of percent above, or a couple of percent below last year's sales figure," Chief Executive Jean-Claude Biver told Reuters at this year's Baselworld watch and jewellery fair.
"Customers are buying less, but they are still buying. The world has not stopped," Biver said, adding that the French and South American markets were doing better than those in America, Russia and Japan.
The Swiss watch industry is grappling with a drop in demand for luxury timepieces as traditional customers such as bankers lose their bonuses and tens of thousands of jobs are axed in the financial sector as a result of the economic downturn.
"It is encouraging that Hublot is eyeing flat sales. What is helping it is the fact that it has a powerhouse like LVMH behind it, which means its distribution is underpinned and it can gain access to key markets," an analyst based in Zurich said.
But Ebel Co-President Loek Oprinsen told Reuters its sales were likely to be below last year's figures as it is hurt by weakness in the key U.S. market.
Ebel is owned by U.S. watchmaker Movado (MOV.N), which is also behind the distribution of other watchbrands like Concord, Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss.
"Ebel is mostly regarded as a female brand and is in a very competitive market as it competes with brands like Omega (UHR.VX) and Cartier (CFR.VX). It is not surprising it is facing tough times," the analyst said.
Oprinsen said Ebel would benefit from its strong position in the female watch category, however, as women were still spending.
Demand for Ebel's watches in the Middle East had been slightly higher in the first quarter, while demand had been flat in Germany and the UK in the period, Oprinsen said.
Watches costing between 2,000 Swiss francs and 5,000 francs were faring better than more expensive timepieces as many customers were starting to opt for less expensive watches, Oprinsen said.

Glashütte Original Basel 2009 novelties: The Lady Serenade Chronograph

A Pleasing Sense of Time
The 38 mm polished stainless steel case is framed by a bezel ringed with 54 TW-if brilliant-cut diamonds (total weight approx. 1.17 ct), adding a touch of luxury to the Lady Serenade Chronograph. The sunburst decoration creates magnificently lustrous reflections on the black galvanized dial. Polished Roman numerals mark the 12 and 6 o’clock positions on the dial, while applied stainless steel markers illustrate the divisions of the other hours. Shining silver threads surround the minute counter at 9 o’clock and the running subsidiary seconds at 3 o’clock, highlighting them clearly on the dial. The crown is consciously playful, embellished as it is with a brilliant-cut diamond.
The latest variation of the Lady Serenade Chronograph is a picture of suppleness with its cool, shining, patented stainless steel bracelet that feels especially pleasant on the wrist. Its satin-finished, polished links take their cue from the feminine curves of the case, allowing the sporty timepiece to emerge as a perfectly formed whole.
The scratchproof sapphire crystal case back allows an unobstructed view of the inner workings of this light and airy chronograph. Manufacture Caliber 39-34, with a power reserve of 40 hours, ensures precise time measurement. Outfitted with all the traditional elements belonging to Glashütte’s art of watchmaking such as a swan-neck fine adjustment, a three-quarter plate, Glashütte ribbing and double sunburst decorations, this movement once again reveals the depth of Glashütte Original’s horological know-how.
The Lady Serenade Collection was unveiled by the Glashütte Original manufactory in 2007. In creating the collection, designers wanted to capture the sensitivity of women and enter into their emotional world. Model variations of these new timepieces are expressions of feminine elegance that match any wardrobe: from casual and sporty through formal business dress and all the way to stylish eveningwear.
Glashütte Original represents a living, authentic manufactory, high exclusivity, traditional watchmaking since 1845, exclusive mechanical masterpieces, and “handmade in Germany.”

Swiss watch industry faces hour of reckoning
Another report by Malcolm Curtis.
Switzerland’s watch-makers are facing the first major slowdown in global exports in more than three years as sales drop significantly in November over the same month in 2007. The industry sees its biggest declines in orders to the United States, which plunged by a quarter, while demand for luxury watches selling for more than 3,000 francs is less severely impacted.
In another timely reminder of the accelerating economic slowdown in Switzerland, exports of the country’s watch-making industry fell sharply last month. The industry reports that sales to customers abroad in November fell 15.3 percent from the same month a year earlier to 1.5 billion francs.
The drop came in what is “traditionally the best month of the year," the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) said in a statement released yesterday. “This decline clearly illustrates the curb on growth suffered by the industry as a result of the world economic climate,” the federation said.
The results mean that on an annualized basis, export growth has fallen below 10 percent – to 8.7 percent – for the first time since March 2005. Reductions were biggest in the United States, the second largest customer for Swiss watches, dropping almost 25 percent to 200 million francs. Sales to Hong Kong, Switzerland’s biggest customer for watches, fell 17 percent to 242 million francs. The two markets account for almost 30 percent of Switzerland’s exports.
The industry had initially managed to resist the impact of the global economic crisis. But it is beginning to feel the effects of the slowdown, which began with banking problems in the US and has since hurt business around the world. The number of Swiss watches exported in November fell by 500,000 or 17.4 percent to 2.3 million, with timepieces of all types selling in fewer numbers, except for those made of platinum. A total of 1,800 watches made with the precious metal sold last month, up more than 53 percent from a year ago.
The steepest fall was in sales of products priced at between 300 and 5,000 francs, which plummeted 30 percent. Luxury watches costing more than 3,000 francs fared better, posting just a 5.4 percent drop in sales value. Geneva brand De Witt was among the first to respond to the dropping sales this week when it announced a restructuring plan that will eliminate five administrative positions from a working force of 77. The company, which just opened new offices in Satigny last month, cited sales that have dropped since September, particularly from customers in the US and Russia.
Among the few markets to remain favorable for Swiss watch makers, Germany (up 9.1 percent) and France (plus 2.9 percent) are bucking the global trend, along with the United Arab Emirates.

Swiss watch exports fall sharply again in Feb

* Exports down 22.4 pct to 1.03 bln francs
* Export volume down 28.4 pct to 1.4 mln units
* Fourth monthly decline in a row
(Recasts with comment from analysts, head of Swiss Watch Federation)
By Katie Reid
ZURICH, March 19 (Reuters) - Demand for Swiss timepieces fell sharply for the fourth month in row in February, with exports to the United States tumbling by almost half as the wealthy cut spending on accessories, data showed on Thursday.
The value of Swiss watch exports slumped 22 percent in nominal terms compared with the year-ago period to 1.03 billion Swiss francs ($902.7 million), the Federal Customs Office said.
Demand for watches from Switzerland, home to the world's largest watchmaker, Swatch Group (UHR.VX), and its rival Richemont (CFR.VX), has dwindled in recent months due to worries about the economic crisis and the fear of job losses.
The export data gives an indication as to how much stock retailers are ordering.
"Retailers are being quite prudent now. They don't want to have high inventory levels," said ZKB analyst Patrik Schwendimann.
But Swatch Group Chief Executive Nick Hayek said on Wednesday that orders from retailers had started to pick up in March as stock levels had fallen, indicating that some consumers were still prepared to spend.
Exports to the United States -- the second-largest market for the Swiss watch industry -- fell by nearly 50 percent, the Swiss Watch Federation said.
"A lot of wealth has disappeared in America due to the huge drops in home and equity prices. All kinds of people are being hit by this -- engineers, people in financial services are losing their jobs," Schwendimann said.
The federation said European markets performed better than the average, with Italy actually growing 2.4 percent, but European consumers are also likely to rein in their spending further in the coming months, which is likely to hit exports.
Exports to Hong Kong, the biggest market for Swiss watches, only fell 4.4 percent.
Jean-Daniel Pasche, head of the Swiss Watch Federation, told Reuters it was difficult to predict how demand for exports would evolve, but it was clear that the first half of the year would be weaker than the previous year.
"How things develop depends very much on the global economy and it is very difficult to predict when the global economy will pick up," Pasche said.
By 1034 GMT, shares in Richemont were 2.1 percent stronger at 17.75 Swiss francs, while Swatch Group shares were up 3.7 percent at 144.70 francs. The DJ personal and household goods index .SXQP was down 0.9 percent
Swatch expects to see a slight increase in full-year sales in 2009 as demand picks up in the second half of the year, but some analysts have said the maker of the colourful Swatch watches is too optimistic about its outlook.
"Swatch Group is still too optimistic for 2009 and expects already an improvement of the situation in March and growth again in the second half. This positive outlook is based on its sell-out at their own retail network," said Vontobel analyst Rene Weber.
Swatch's relatively upbeat tones contrast with those from Richemont, which said in January it was facing its toughest markets in two decades and has started to cut jobs. Its Cartier brand has introduced shorter working hours at one of its factories.
The federation said the number of timepieces exported also fell 28.4 percent from a year ago to 1.4 million and the downturn was particularly marked for watches in the low- and mid-price segments. (Additional reporting by Emma Thomasson; Editing by David Cowell)

Ladies Watches, 2009 Watches For Ladies to Choose
By Shahzarimin Salim
This Article is about choosing Ladies Watches for 2009 and suggesting collection of watches to fill in their wardrobe.
What is in store for ladies in 2009? Are the watch company and manufacturers releasing new models for ladies this year?
Men may settled with one or two watches to get him going for a year, but for women who are fashion conscious, have multiple hobbies and would like to appear outstanding' in many different occasions, multiple choice of watches is what you need. I'm sharing with you here watches that is rather cheap but have great design and style.
Apart from last years collection that is still timelessly beautiful and precise, let's look for new ladies watch option for 2009 that you might consider, to match with your leather handbag, sports outfit, and casual style.
We start off with watches to match with leather handbag. Ladies 'dress watches', whether it is with bracelet or leather, both are good options.
Movado watches have a very feminine sense of appearance. Movado watches mostly come with bracelets. The stainless steel bracelet and scratch resistant sapphire crystal, paired with a gold or silver sharp dial with black face underneath, and a single diamond on the 12 hour point is astonishingly beautiful. The 'Amorosa' collection is a must have in a ladies wardrobe.
If you want to opt for a leather version, choose the 'Amorosa' collection with a black leather strap. Priced normally below $500, this watch will match all your elegance sense. Seiko does produce a cheaper version of leather watches without compromising the strong desire for elegance. You can try and look for Seiko Women Brown Leather Strap priced normally below $80.
Appear casual in Timex Women Easy Reader or a Citizen Women Eco-Drive for ladies, priced below $90, it's the best option during the current economic turmoil. Wear your 'khakis' pants and women polo shirt, this watches will tag along plain but fit in nicely with your style.

Well, who said the recession will affect your style and elegance. For me, a new watch can spark a little happiness, a remedy and keep your life interesting every time you need to see the time.
By doing a little research, you can still afford a sense of elegance at a friction of the cost.

The Rolex Submariner Vs the Rolex Sea-Dweller
The Rolex Submariner Vs the Rolex Sea-Dweller
By Scott Jhon Parham
The Rolex Submariner and the Rolex Sea-Dweller are two of the truly exceptional sport models Rolex makes. Meant for the divers, both these models have taken the brand 'Rolex' to new heights or, should we say, depths. These two models are popular all over the world for their ability to perform accurately even deep under water.
How is the Sea-Dweller Different from the Submariner?
The basic difference between the two lies in their depth ratings. While the current Submariner models have a maximum depth rating of 300 meters or 1000 feet, the current versions of Sea-Dweller can comfortably go underwater up to a depth of 4000 feet (all earlier models had a depth rating of 2000 feet). As a result, the Submariner is the choice of amateur and recreational divers whereas professional divers go for the Sea-Dweller. The underwater treasure hunters also wear Sea-Dwellers.
Another major difference between the two models is the presence of a one-way gas escape valve opposite the winding crown in the Sea-Dweller. This special feature has been added to it to protect the watch from internal pressure, which builds-up when the divers go to the decompression chambers. Deep sea divers use a helium/oxygen mix in their air tanks, which can easily permeate the crystal of the watch. However, during decompression, helium particles are not able to come out of the watch, thus, blowing the crystal out of the watch. The gas escape valve was the a solution to this problem, which has proved extremely effective. The current Sea-Dweller models feature a larger and improved gas escape valve.
You will also find that the Sea-Dweller is bigger than the Submariner. This primarily is because of the thicker sapphire crystal that makes the former about 4mm thicker than the latter. The thicker crystal also leads to another notable difference between the two. Although the Sea-Dweller displays the date, it does not feature the Cyclops lens (magnifying lens). The thicker crystal does not allow for such a magnifying lens.
To What Extent the Sea-Dweller is Similar to the Submariner?
There are certain features found in both the models. The major similarity between the two is their ability to survive under water without any flaw in their functionality. In addition, there are many other aspects where the two are similar. For instance, you can find the following features in both models
1. A scratch-resistant synthetic sapphire crystal
2. Unidirectional bezel, capable of turning only counterclockwise preventing the accidental movement of the bezel while diving
3. New Triplock system now features a triple gasket system that screws down tightly onto the case tube and against the Oyster case. This offers another layer of protection under water
4. Self-winding mechanism with a perpetual motor
5. Made of either solid block of 904L stainless steel (a stainless steel alloy which is completely corrosion resistant) or gold
The Rolex Submariner and the Sea-Dweller are alike in many ways, but the Sea-Dweller is a bigger, heavier and tougher brother of the Submariner. Go for the Submariner, if you are into recreational diving, however, for true professional and commercial divers, the Sea-Dweller should be the choice.
